Francis said, And after the Lord gave me some brothers, no one showed me what I should do, but the Most High himself revealed to me that I should live according the form of the holy Gospel.

Franciscans love to quote the first part in the spirit of new brothers being a divine gift, but it's really a subordinate clause. To me the genius of Francis is to know that the gift--wanted or unwanted--that we are to each other forces upon us the demands of the Gospel life.
