MAY is Mary\u2019s month, and I
\nMuse at that and wonder why:
\nHer feasts follow reason,
\nDated due to season\u2014 <\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Candlemas, Lady Day;
\nBut the Lady Month, May,
\nWhy fasten that upon her,
\nWith a feasting in her honour?<\/p>\n

Is it only its being brighter
\nThan the most are must delight her?
\nIs it opportunest
\nAnd flowers finds soonest?<\/p>\n

Ask of her, the mighty mother:
\nHer reply puts this other
\nQuestion: What is Spring?\u2014
\nGrowth in every thing\u2014<\/p>\n

Flesh and fleece, fur and feather,
\nGrass and greenworld all together;
\nStar-eyed strawberry-breasted
\nThrostle above her nested<\/p>\n

Cluster of bugle blue eggs thin
\nForms and warms the life within;
\nAnd bird and blossom swell
\nIn sod or sheath or shell.<\/p>\n

All things rising, all things sizing
\nMary sees, sympathising
\nWith that world of good,
\nNature\u2019s motherhood.<\/p>\n

Their magnifying of each its kind
\nWith delight calls to mind
\nHow she did in her stored
\nMagnify the Lord.<\/p>\n

Well but there was more than this:
\nSpring\u2019s universal bliss
\nMuch, had much to say
\nTo offering Mary May.<\/p>\n

When drop-of-blood-and-foam-dapple
\nBloom lights the orchard-apple
\nAnd thicket and thorp are merry
\nWith silver-surf\u00e8d cherry<\/p>\n

And azuring-over greybell makes
\nWood banks and brakes wash wet like lakes
\nAnd magic cuckoocall
\nCaps, clears, and clinches all\u2014<\/p>\n

This ecstasy all through mothering earth
\nTells Mary her mirth till Christ\u2019s birth
\nTo remember and exultation
