A friend of mine wrote this poem three years ago and recently shared it with me. “Splinters of the Cross” makes for a good meditation today, Good Friday.<\/em><\/p>\n

Splinters<\/span>\u00a0of the\u00a0Cross<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Bolek Kabala<\/p>\n

May 15, 2013<\/p>\n

\"36_naili\"<\/a>Like men hounded, harried<\/p>\n

we pressed on, pelted by the rain<\/p>\n

The hulk of the shipwreck behind us, obscured by the tempest<\/p>\n

What demon had driven us to capsize here?<\/p>\n

Our clothes were tattered<\/p>\n

blood flowing from the pricks of brambles and thorns<\/p>\n

the gleam of a wolf\u2019s eye in the darkness<\/p>\n

the chant of a crazed medicine man in the void<\/p>\n

Lightning tore the sky asunder<\/p>\n

And we started up the hills, the rock, the crag<\/p>\n

Barren<\/p>\n

Desolate<\/p>\n

Crying for mercy, we struggled on<\/p>\n

But wrath was upon us<\/p>\n

It drove us onwards, and upwards<\/p>\n

Until we could find a way forward only on our knees<\/p>\n

Lord, will you not intercede on behalf of a sinner?<\/p>\n

De Profundis<\/i><\/p>\n

Then the sky was stilled<\/p>\n

The sulfurous acridity of insomnia lifted<\/p>\n

And lo, we beheld it<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Cross<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0Cross<\/span>\u00a0atop the Rock of our madness and despair<\/p>\n

A shaft of light broke through the clouds<\/p>\n

It was a\u00a0cross<\/span>\u00a0\u2013 there could no longer be any doubt<\/p>\n

Its\u00a0splinters<\/span>\u00a0beckoned<\/p>\n

A creeping vine burst forth, and I exhaled<\/p>\n
