The pious mantra that comes to mind is \u00a1VIVA CRISTO REY! when one thinks of this holy man. Recall the anti-Catholic government\u00a0soldiers said:\u00a0 &#8220;If you shout, \u2018Death to Christ the King\u2019, we will spare your life.&#8221; His response:\u00a0He only answered: &#8220;Long live Christ the King! Long live Our Lady of Guadalupe!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>At 13, Jos\u00e9 was the\u00a0flag-bearer in the Cristero army fighting (fiercely fighting in mid-1920s) for the right to remain Catholic in the face of anti-religious government policies.\u00a0Also serving the Cristero army were two older brothers, Macario and Miguel. Mexican\u00a0government troops captured Jos\u00e9 and imprisoned, abused, mutilated, him having ordered the young man to reject Jesus Christ and His Church on this date in 1928.<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">\u00a0Jos\u00e9 refused and was given the martyr&#8217;s crown. The details of his death are gruesome: he\u00a0<\/span>hacked with machetes, stabbed with bayonets and finally shot on 10 February 1928 in Sahuayo, Michoac\u00e1n de Ocampo, Mexico.<\/p>\n<div class=\"text_exposed_show\">\n<p>The body of the saint is interred in the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Sahuaro, Mexico with a\u00a0bone fragment relic enshrined in the church of the Immaculate Conception, Taft, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Barely seen in this image one sees Pope Benedict praying before the tomb of the Saint\u00a0Jos\u00e9 S\u00e1nchez del R\u00edo when he visited Mexico. It was Benedict\u00a0who\u00a0declared him a martyr and who beatified Jos\u00e9 on November 20, 2005.
