He is the only English Doctor of the Church and a fine example of monastic learning and holiness. Most people relate to him as the historian of the English Church because of his famous work,\u00a0<em>Historia Ecclesiastica.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Christ was his King. No other lord<br \/>\nDid Bede aspire to serve.<br \/>\nNo other love could claim the heart<br \/>\nHe gave without reserve.<\/p>\n<p>From boyhood onward his delight<br \/>\nWas in the scriptures found,<br \/>\nOr singing praise to him who hung<br \/>\nUpon the Rood, thorn-crowned.<\/p>\n<p>Like Easter night, Bede\u2019s quiet cell<br \/>\nSaw Christ arising there;<br \/>\nAnd when Ascension dawned at last<br \/>\nThe Son shone bright and fair.<\/p>\n<p>To Christ the King of glory sing,<br \/>\nAnd God the Father praise,<br \/>\nWhose Spirit dwells in peaceful hearts<br \/>\nAnd guides them in his ways.<\/p>\n<p>The text is an ancient monastic hymn.
