This was the time of persecution of diverse practice of religion. Before his martyrdom, he wrote a letter to his fellow Christians in Smyrna (the city of Izmir in modern-day Turkey) in which he said, \u201cWhere the bishop is present, there is the Catholic Church.\u201d Hence, the word \u201cCatholic\u201d comes from the Greek root meaning \u201cuniversal.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"related_container\">\n<div class=\"right_link\"><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>The <em>Catechism of the Catholic Church<\/em>\u00a0teaches that the Church is <em>catholic<\/em>\u00a0because \u201cThe Church is catholic: she proclaims the fullness of the faith. She bears in herself and administers the totality of the means of salvation. She is sent out to all peoples. She speaks to all men. <strong>She encompasses all times<\/strong>.
