\"Titus<\/a>The\u00a0Church’s liturgical calendar has a rather interesting friar, priest philosopher and martyr who is honored today:\u00a0\u00a0Titus Brandsma,<\/strong>\u00a0O.Carm., the Dutch Carmelite\u00a0friar\u00a0opposed to\u00a0Nazi\u00a0ideology\u00a0and who actively worked against it at the time of the Second World War; his last days were spent at the infamous Dachau concentration camp. Brandsma died on 26 July 1942, from a lethal injection administered by a German nurse of the SS, as an experiment.\u00a0He was\u00a0beatified\u00a0as a\u00a0martyr\u00a0of the faith\u00a0in November 1985 by\u00a0Saint John Paul II. His\u00a0feast day\u00a0is observed within the Carmelite Order on 27 July.<\/div>\n

The Blessed entered the\u00a0novitiate\u00a0of the Carmelite friars in\u00a0Boxmeer, Netherlands, on 17 September 1898, where he took the\u00a0religious name\u00a0Titus<\/strong>\u00a0(to honor his father) by which he is now known, and professed his first\u00a0vows\u00a0in October 1899.\u00a0Ordained priest in 1905, Brandsma was a scholar of Carmelite\u00a0mysticism\u00a0and was awarded a\u00a0doctorate of philosophy\u00a0at Rome in 1909. Beginning in 1916 Brandsma’s scholarly work was to translate the works of Saint Teresa of \u00c1vila\u00a0into Dutch.<\/p>\n

One of the founders of the Catholic University of Nijmegen (now\u00a0Radboud University), Father Titus Brandsma was a professor of philosophy and the history of mysticism at the school in 1923; he later served as\u00a0<\/span>Rector\u00a0Magnificus<\/em>. As a teacher he had the reputation of being accessible.\u00a0<\/span>In 1935, Brandsma lectured on Carmelite spirituality in the US.<\/p>\n

Blessed Brandsma’s studies on mysticism, particularly that of the Carmelite style, was the basis for the establishment in 1968 as the\u00a0Titus Brandsma Institute<\/strong>\u00a0in Nijmegen.\u00a0If you are interested you can search for his biography\u00a0The Man behind the Myth.<\/em><\/p>\n
