From the fourteenth century <em>Cloud of Unknowing<\/em> we read:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;God&#8217;s word&#8230;can be likened to a mirror. Spiritually, the &#8216;eye&#8217; of your soul is your reason: your conscience is your spiritual &#8216;face&#8217;.
