The Patriarchs and Major Archbishops from the Eastern Churches are in Rome this week for a plenary meeting of the Congregation for Eastern Churches.<\/p>\n<p>Who are these bishops? The current (2013) patriarchs and major archbishops are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Patriarch Gregory of the Melkites<\/li>\n<li>Patriarch Bechara of the Maronites<\/li>\n<li>Patriarch Ignatius of Syrians<\/li>\n<li>Patriarch Louis of the Chaldeans<\/li>\n<li>Patriarch Nerses of the Armenians<\/li>\n<li>Patriarch Ibrahim of the Copts<\/li>\n<li>Major Archbishop Sviatoslav of the Ukrainians<\/li>\n<li>Major Archbishop Lucian of the Romanians<\/li>\n<li>Major Archbishop George of the Syro-Malabars<\/li>\n<li>Major Archbishop Baselios of the Syro-Malankars<\/li>\n<li>Archbishop\u00a0Fouad, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This year\u2019s meeting centered around the theme of religious liberty, an issue that is at crisis proportions around the world, even in the Western nations.<\/p>\n<p>From Vatican Radio, \u201cCiting the words of his predecessor, Pope emeritus Benedict XVI in the post-Synodal exhortation,\u00a0<i>Ecclesia in medio oriente\u00a0<\/i>(nn. 39-40), Pope Francis said, \u201c[You are] watchful guardians of communion and servants of Ecclesial unity,\u201d adding, \u201cthat union, which you are called to realize in your Churches, finds natural and full expression in the \u2018indefectible union with the Bishop of Rome\u2019.\u201d Pope Francis went on to say, \u201cIn order that our witness be credible, we are called ever to seek justice, mercy, faith, charity, patience and meekness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As you know, the current Pope and the previous one has had a deep appreciation for the patrimony of Eastern Christianity.
