\"\"<\/a>Blessed John XXIII has his liturgical memorial today. He’ll be a canonized on 27 April 2014. Good Pope John is well-known for his calling the Second Vatican Council but he’s also a pope remained close the Church’s tradition.<\/em><\/p>\n

Hymn texts are a wonderful way of getting at who a person is. J. Michael Thompson wrote this hymn.<\/em><\/p>\n

1. Come now, you lovers of the feasts!
\nIn tune with heaven\u2019s choir,
\nIn honor of our good Pope John
\nWe sing with harp and lyre!
\nFrom peasant stock in Bergamo
\nHe heard at first your call,
\nAnd left his home and family
\nTo freely give his all.<\/p>\n

2. As priest, he healed old enmities
\nAnd followed your own path,
\nResolving such disputes with love
\nAnd took the shepherd\u2019s staff.
\nSent eastward, in the time of war,
\nHe served the Prince of Peace,
\nProviding help to those in need
\nIn Turkey and in Greece.<\/p>\n

3. When sent by Rome to France, he sought
\nTo heal the scars of war,
\nHe spoke of peace and love to both
\nThose near and those afar.
\nThen to the church of Venice called,
\nHe led with shepherd\u2019s care,
\nAnd in obedience and peace
\nHe preached the gospel there.<\/p>\n

4. The Spirit\u2019s loving voice was heard
\nBy leaders come to Rome;
\nThus he ascended Peter\u2019s chair
\nAnd took the name of John.
\nInstead of fierce severity,
\nWith mercy\u2019s medicine
\nHe met the needs of present day,
\nPreached newness from within.<\/p>\n

5. As \u201cservant of God\u2019s servants,\u201d he
\nConvened a Council\u2019s skills
\nTo join the Church to changing world,
\nWith grace to heal life\u2019s ills.
\nWhen illness brought him near to death,
\nHe offered up his life
\nThat God might bless the Council\u2019s work,
\nWith blessings come from strife.<\/p>\n

6. To God the Father, God the Son,
\nAnd God the Paraclete,
\nWe sing our song of glory now,
\nA hymn both strong and sweet.
\nWith Good Pope John and heaven\u2019s choirs
\nMay we our praises raise
\nTill we are joined with them at last
\nFor endless length of days!<\/p>\n
