Crucially so. Pacem in Terris was the first papal letter address to \u201call people of good will.\u201d It followed the Cuban missal crisis.\u00a0The importance of this encyclical is not important merely for social concerns, but for true peace among peoples, solidarity and justice. Justice and mercy are the parameters of life and the path of the journey in building, confessing Jesus Christ, though it was hoped that non-believers would take note of what was contained therein. The goal of the papal teaching was to provide \u201can opening of spaces of freedom and dialogue.\u201d<\/p>\n<div title=\"Page 4\">\n<p>Among the points of PT that we have to remember (and see echoes in the teachings of later popes):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022 People should take an <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">active role in public life and organizations and influence<\/span> them from within (147)<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022\u00a0Humans should carry on temporal activities \u201cas acts within the moral order\u201d (150).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022 A <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">unity between faith and action is needed<\/span>; solid Christian education will help achieve this unity<br \/>\n(152-153).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Distinguish<\/span> between <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">false philosophical ideas and movements<\/span> deriving from them (159).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022 <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Christians need prudence<\/span> in determining when to collaborate with non-Christians in social and economic affairs (160).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u2022 \u201cPeace will be but an empty sounding word unless it is founded on the order which the present document has outlined in confident hope: <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">an order founded on truth, built according to justice, vivified and integrated by charity, and put into practice in freedom<\/span>\u201d (167).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Vatican Radio carried a piece today on <i>Pacem in Terris<\/i> with Pope <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.radiovaticana.va\/news\/2013\/10\/03\/pope_francis:_pacem_in_terris_a_guide_for_a_better,_peaceful_world\/en1-733918\">Francis\u2019 remarks<\/a><\/strong>. A few paragraphs are excerpted here:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The Encyclical, Pope Francis said, reminds us that the basis of peace-making exists in mankind\u2019s \u201cdivine origin\u201d and thus everyone, from individuals and families to society and States are called to \u201cbuild peace, on the example of Jesus Christ\u2026 by promoting and practicing justice with truth and love\u2026(and) contributing\u2026to integral human development\u201d through solidarity. And that means an end to \u201cegotism, individualism, and group interests at every level.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">But has today\u2019s world learned any lessons from <i>Pacem in Terris?<\/i> the Pope asked: \u201cAre the words justice and solidarity\u201d found \u201csolely in our dictionary or are we all working to realize them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><i>Pacem in Terris<\/i> reminds us that \u201cthere can be no real peace and harmony if we fail to work for a more just\u201d and jointly supportive society, the Pope said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">And if man, and indeed, society and authorities themselves share a common divine origin, then every human being shares a common dignity \u201cto promote, respect and safeguard always.\u201d<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>50 years after Blessed John XXIII published Pacem in Terris, an encyclical that promoted peace in a world tortured by war and various other forms of unrest, still is relevant today.
