\"MLK<\/a>The 17 minute “call to arms” speech delivered by Doctor Martin Luther King, Jr, on this date in 1963, at the Lincoln Memorial, Washington, DC, is recalled today. Few of the key people from 1963 are still around but many of the listeners are plentiful.<\/p>\n

Benedictine monk, scholar and hymn writer Father Harry Hagan, wrote this hymn “We Have a Dream,” a meditation on and a prayer for our aspirations for peace.<\/p>\n

Speeches are meant to move its hearers to action. In what ways am I working for peace today?<\/p>\n

We have a dream that we shall see
\nall races rise as one
\na dream of vast equality:
\nthe day God\u2019s will is done.<\/p>\n

Lord grant that this may be the day.
\nLift us so we may rise
\nand lift each other by your Word
\nfilled with divine surprise.<\/p>\n

We have a dream that we shall touch
\neach person\u2019s self and soul;
\nwith cords of mercy bind them up
\ntill they, as you, are whole.<\/p>\n

Lord, grant that this may be the day
\nwhen wounds begin to heal,
\nwhen enemies are reconciled
\nand share a common meal.<\/p>\n

We have a dream that we shall know
\nthe coming of the Lord;
\nwhen in the twinkling of an eye
\nearth\u2019s goodness is restored.<\/p>\n

Lord, grant that this may be the day
\nwhen you shall draw so near
\nand in your presence we are filled
\nwith love that casts out fear.<\/p>\n

We have a dream that we shall feel
\nyour justice and your sway
\nwhen we shall follow you alone
\nthough we be framed of clay.<\/p>\n

Lord, grant that this may be the day
\nwhen justice sets us free
\nand we by being true to Christ
\nshall claim our dignity.<\/p>\n

We have a dream that we shall live
\nin harmony and peace
\nwhen lamb and wolf together lie
\nas heirs of your increase.<\/p>\n

Lord, grant that this may be the day
\nwhen walls are broken down;
\nand we as sisters, brothers, all
\nshall one in Christ be found.<\/p>\n

We have a dream that we shall reach
\nJerusalem the New
\nwhere every tear is wiped away,
\nwhere all is held by you.<\/p>\n

Lord, grant that this may be the day
\nwhen life begins to reign
\nand gathers all into the life
\nthat you yourself sustain.<\/p>\n
