Before his retirement in February, Pope Benedict appointed Ernst von Freyberg, 54, &nbsp;as the new head of the bank that causes a lot of distraction. Officially, the real name for the Vatican bank is the <a class=\"zem_slink\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Institute_for_Works_of_Religion\" title=\"Institute for Works of Religion\" rel=\"wikipedia\" target=\"_blank\">Institute for Religious Works<\/a> (IOR) or sometimes the IOR is called the Institute for the Works of Religion. The IOR is not a commercial bank like Chase or TD Bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 12px; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; \"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 12px; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; \"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\">Mr von Freyberg is a German citizen, an accomplished businessman with strong Catholic roots and who is a member of the Order of Malta, a group of faith Catholics who serve the Church and society by defending the faith and serving the needs of the sick and poor.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 12px; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; \"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 12px; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; \"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\">I, for one, would like to see the IOR vanish. In my opinion, there is a little need for the IOR. But I am happy to hear von Freyberg say,&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 12px; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; \"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 12px; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; \"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\">&#8220;Our mission is to serve and shine,&#8221; the bank&#8217;s president, Ernst von Freyberg, said with a smile. &#8220;Our first pillar is transparency.&#8221; He spoke from an office in the medieval tower that houses the bank inside the Vatican, beneath a painting depicting a Gospel lesson, &#8220;Render unto Caesar what is Caesar&#8217;s, and to God, what is God&#8217;s.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"zemanta-pixie\" style=\"margin-top:10px;height:15px\"><a class=\"zemanta-pixie-a\" href=\"http:\/\/www.zemanta.com\/?px\" title=\"Enhanced by Zemanta\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"zemanta-pixie-img\" src=\"http:\/\/img.zemanta.com\/zemified_e.png?x-id=cbbdc64c-358c-4b2e-954c-77bc74cd737e\" alt=\"Enhanced by Zemanta\" style=\"border:none;float:right\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12px; \">Better than the NY Times article is the<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12px; \">&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.news.va\/en\/news\/interview-with-ior-president-ernst-von-freyberg\" style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12px; \">interview Mr von Freyberg gave with Vatican Radio<\/a><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12px; \">. For one, it is a fuller exposition without an agenda.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 12px; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; \"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; \"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 13px; \"><span style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12px; letter-spacing: 0px; \">If what was reported is true, there may be hope for the Vatican Bank only founded in 1942 but has a lackluster patrimony. So much so there is an incredible list of alleged activities from kidnapping, murder,&nbsp;<\/span><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; \">money laundering, internal fraud, mis-representation, poor management, and so on. Scandal exists with this institution and we can without more scandal since it is sinful (immoral) and criminal.&nbsp;<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 13px; \"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; \"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 13px; \"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; \">Under Pope Benedict XVI the Holy See published rules of engagement with the formation of the Financial Information Authority. Not long along ago Pope Francis cancelled the stipends given to the cardinals who acted as advisors to the Bank. More change to come.<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 13px; \"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; \"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px; font-size: 13px; \"><font face=\"Times New Roman\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px; \">Some people say that the IOR&#8217;s profit for 2012 was $112.6 million (USD) managing total assests of $9.23 billion (USD).
