Let us pray for the Roman Pontiff whose baptismal name is George, and for all those who claim the saint has their heavenly patron before God Almighty.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n

St. George and The Dragon<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Of Hector’s deeds did Homer sing,<\/span><\/p>\n

And of the sack of stately Troy, <\/span><\/p>\n

What griefs fair Helena did bring,<\/span><\/p>\n

Which was Sir Paris’ only joy: <\/span><\/p>\n

And by my pen I will recite<\/span><\/p>\n

St. George’s deeds, and English knight.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Against the Sarazens so rude<\/span><\/p>\n

Fought he full long and many a day,<\/span><\/p>\n

Where many gyants he subdu’d,<\/span><\/p>\n

In honour of the Christian way;<\/span><\/p>\n

And after many adventures past,<\/span><\/p>\n

To Egypt land he came at last.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, as the story plain doth tell, <\/span><\/p>\n

Within that countrey there did rest<\/span><\/p>\n

A dreadful dragon fierce and fell,<\/span><\/p>\n

Whereby they were full sore opprest:<\/span><\/p>\n

Who by his poisonous breath each day<\/span><\/p>\n

Did many of the city slay.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The grief whereof did grow so great<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout the limits of the land, <\/span><\/p>\n

That they their wise-men did intreat<\/span><\/p>\n

To shew their cunning out of hand;<\/span><\/p>\n

What way they might this fiend destroy,<\/span><\/p>\n

That did the countrey thus annoy. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The wise-men all before the king,<\/span><\/p>\n

This answer fram’d incontinent:<\/span><\/p>\n

The dragon none to death might bring<\/span><\/p>\n

By any means they could invent;<\/span><\/p>\n

His skin more hard than brass was found,<\/span><\/p>\n

That sword nor spear could pierce nor wound.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

When this the people understood,<\/span><\/p>\n

They cryed out most piteouslye,<\/span><\/p>\n

The dragon’s breath infects their blood,<\/span><\/p>\n

That every day in heaps they dye;<\/span><\/p>\n

Among them such a plague it bred,<\/span><\/p>\n

The living scarce could bury the dead.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

No means there were, as they could hear,<\/span><\/p>\n

For to appease the dragon’s rage,<\/span><\/p>\n

But to present some virgin clear,<\/span><\/p>\n

Whose blood his fury might asswage;<\/span><\/p>\n

Each day he would a maiden eat,<\/span><\/p>\n

For to allay his hunger great.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

This thing by art the wise-men found,<\/span><\/p>\n

Which truly must observed be;<\/span><\/p>\n

Wherefore, throughout the city round,<\/span><\/p>\n

A virgin pure of good degree<\/span><\/p>\n

Was, by the king’s commission, still <\/span><\/p>\n

Taken up to serve the dragon’s will.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus did the dragon every day<\/span><\/p>\n

Untimely crop some virgin flowr,<\/span><\/p>\n

Till all the maids were worn away,<\/span><\/p>\n

And none were left him to devour;<\/span><\/p>\n

Saving the king’s fair daughter bright,<\/span><\/p>\n

Her father’s only heart’s delight.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Then came the officers to the king,<\/span><\/p>\n

That heavy message to declare,<\/span><\/p>\n

Which did his heart with sorrow sting; <\/span><\/p>\n

“She is,” quoth he, “my kingdom’s heir:<\/span><\/p>\n

O let us all be poisoned here,<\/span><\/p>\n

Ere she should die, that is my dear.” <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Then rose the poeple presently,<\/span><\/p>\n

And to the king in rage they went; <\/span><\/p>\n

They said his daughter dear should dye,<\/span><\/p>\n

The dragon’s fury to prevent:<\/span><\/p>\n

“Our daughters all are dead,” quoth they,<\/span><\/p>\n

“And have been made the dragon’s prey;<\/span><\/p>\n

And by their blood we rescued were,<\/span><\/p>\n

And thou hast sav’d thy life thereby;<\/span><\/p>\n

And now in sooth it is but faire,<\/span><\/p>\n

For us thy daughter so should die.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“O save my daughter,” said the king,<\/span><\/p>\n

“And let ME feel the dragon’s sting.”<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Then fell fair Sabra on her knee,<\/span><\/p>\n

And to her father dear did say, <\/span><\/p>\n

“O father, strive not thus for me,<\/span><\/p>\n

But let me be the dragon’s prey;<\/span><\/p>\n

It may be, for my sake alone<\/span><\/p>\n

This plague upon the land was thrown.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“Tis better I should dye,” she said,<\/span><\/p>\n

“Than all your subjects perish quite;<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps the dragon here was laid, <\/span><\/p>\n

For my offence to work his spite,<\/span><\/p>\n

And after he hath suckt my gore,<\/span><\/p>\n

Your land shall feel the grief no more.”<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“What hast thou done, my daughter dear,<\/span><\/p>\n

For to deserve this heavy scourge?<\/span><\/p>\n

It is my fault, as may appear,<\/span><\/p>\n

Which makes the gods our state to purge;<\/span><\/p>\n

Then ought I die, to stint the strife,<\/span><\/p>\n

And to preserve thy happy life.”<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Like mad-men, all the people cried,<\/span><\/p>\n

“Thy death to us can do no good; <\/span><\/p>\n

Our safety only doth abide<\/span><\/p>\n

In making her the dragon’s food.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“Lo! here I am, I come,” quoth she,<\/span><\/p>\n

“Therefore do what you will with me.”<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“Nay stay, dear daughter,” quoth the queen,<\/span><\/p>\n

“And as thou art a virgin bright,<\/span><\/p>\n

That hast for vertue famous been,<\/span><\/p>\n

So let me cloath thee all in white;<\/span><\/p>\n

And crown thy head with flowers sweet,<\/span><\/p>\n

An ornament for virgins meet.”<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

And when she was attired so, <\/span><\/p>\n

According to her mother’s mind, <\/span><\/p>\n

Unto the stake then did she go, <\/span><\/p>\n

To which her tender limbs they bind; <\/span><\/p>\n

And being bound to stake a thrall <\/span><\/p>\n

She bade farewell unto them all. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“Farewell, my father dear,” quoth she, <\/span><\/p>\n

“And my sweet mother meek and mild; <\/span><\/p>\n

Take you no thought nor weep for me, <\/span><\/p>\n

For you may have another child; <\/span><\/p>\n

Since for my.country’s good I dye, <\/span><\/p>\n

Death I receive most willinglye.” <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The king and queen and all their train <\/span><\/p>\n

With weeping eyes went then. their way, <\/span><\/p>\n

And let their daughter there remain, <\/span><\/p>\n

To be the hungry dragon’s prey: <\/span><\/p>\n

But as she did there weeping lye, <\/span><\/p>\n

Behold St. George came riding by. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

And seeing there a lady bright <\/span><\/p>\n

So rudely tyed unto a stake, <\/span><\/p>\n

As well became a valiant knight, <\/span><\/p>\n

He straight to her his way did take: <\/span><\/p>\n

“Tell me, sweet maiden,” then quoth he, <\/span><\/p>\n

“What caitif thus abuseth thee? <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

“And, lo! by Christ his cross I vow, <\/span><\/p>\n

Which here is figured on my breast, <\/span><\/p>\n

I will revenge it on his brow, <\/span><\/p>\n

And break my lance upon his chest:” <\/span><\/p>\n

And speaking thus whereas he stood, <\/span><\/p>\n

The dragon issued from the wood. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The lady, that did first espy <\/span><\/p>\n

The dreadful dragon coming so, <\/span><\/p>\n

Unto St. George aloud did cry, <\/span><\/p>\n

And willed him away to go; <\/span><\/p>\n

“Here comes that cursed fiend,” quoth she, <\/span><\/p>\n

“That soon will make an end of me.” <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

St. George then looking round about, <\/span><\/p>\n

The fiery dragon soon espy’d, <\/span><\/p>\n

And like a knight of courage stout, <\/span><\/p>\n

Against him did most furiously ride; <\/span><\/p>\n

And with such blows he did him greet, <\/span><\/p>\n

He fell beneath his horse’s feet. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

For with his launce that was so strong, <\/span><\/p>\n

As he came gaping in his face, <\/span><\/p>\n

In at his mouth he thrust along; <\/span><\/p>\n

For he could pierce no other place: <\/span><\/p>\n

And thus within the lady’s view <\/span><\/p>\n

This mighty dragon straight he slew. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

The savour of his poisoned breath <\/span><\/p>\n

Could do this holy knight no harm; <\/span><\/p>\n

Thus he the lady sav’d from death, <\/span><\/p>\n

And home he led her by the arm; <\/span><\/p>\n

Which when King Ptolemy did see, <\/span><\/p>\n

There was great mirth and melody. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

When as that valiant champion there <\/span><\/p>\n

Had slain the dragon in the field, <\/span><\/p>\n

To court he brought the lady fair, <\/span><\/p>\n

Which to their hearts much joy did yield. <\/span><\/p>\n

He in the court of Egypt staid <\/span><\/p>\n

Till he most falsely was betray’d. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

That lady dearly lov’d the knight, <\/span><\/p>\n

He counted her his only joy; <\/span><\/p>\n

But when their love was brought to light, <\/span><\/p>\n

It turn’d unto their great annoy: <\/span><\/p>\n

Th’ Morocco king was in the court, <\/span><\/p>\n

Who to the orchard did resort, <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Dayly to take the pleasant air, <\/span><\/p>\n

For pleasure sake he us’d to walk; <\/span><\/p>\n

Under a wall he oft did hear <\/span><\/p>\n

St. George with lady Sabra talk; <\/span><\/p>\n

Their love he shew’d unto the king, <\/span><\/p>\n

Which to St. George great woe did bring. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Those kings together did devise <\/span><\/p>\n

To make the Christian knight away: <\/span><\/p>\n

With letters him in curteous wise <\/span><\/p>\n

They straightway sent to Persia, <\/span><\/p>\n

But wrote to the sophy him to kill, <\/span><\/p>\n

And treacherously his blood to spill. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Thus they for good did him reward <\/span><\/p>\n

With evil, and most subtilly, <\/span><\/p>\n

By much vile meanes they had regard <\/span><\/p>\n

To work his death most cruelly; <\/span><\/p>\n

Who, as through Persia land he rode, <\/span><\/p>\n

With zeal destroy’d each idol god. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

For which offence he straight was thrown <\/span><\/p>\n

Into a dungeon dark and deep; <\/span><\/p>\n

Where, when he thought his wrongs upon, <\/span><\/p>\n

He bitterly did wail and weep: <\/span><\/p>\n

Yet like a knight of courage stout, <\/span><\/p>\n

At length his way he digged out. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Three grooms of the King of Persia <\/span><\/p>\n

By night this valiant champion slew, <\/span><\/p>\n

Though he had fasted many a day, <\/span><\/p>\n

And then away from thence he flew <\/span><\/p>\n

On the best steed the sophy had; <\/span><\/p>\n

Which when he knew he was full mad. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Towards Christendom he made his flight, <\/span><\/p>\n

But met a gyant by the way, <\/span><\/p>\n

With whom in combat he did fight <\/span><\/p>\n

Most valiantly a summer’s day: <\/span><\/p>\n

Who yet, for all his bats of steel, <\/span><\/p>\n

Was forc’d the sting of death to feel. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Back o’er the seas with many bands <\/span><\/p>\n

Of warlike souldiers soon he past, <\/span><\/p>\n

Vowing upon those heathen lands <\/span><\/p>\n

To work revenge; which at the last, <\/span><\/p>\n

Ere thrice three years were gone and spent, <\/span><\/p>\n

He wrought unto his heart’s content. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Save onely Egypt land he spar’d, <\/span><\/p>\n

For Sabra bright her only sake, <\/span><\/p>\n

And, ere for her he had regard, <\/span><\/p>\n

He meant a tryal kind to make: <\/span><\/p>\n

Mean while the king, o’ercome in field, <\/span><\/p>\n

Unto Saint George did quickly yield. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Then straight Morocco’s king he slew, <\/span><\/p>\n

And took fair Sabra to his wife,
\n <\/span><\/p>\n

But meant to try if she were true, <\/span><\/p>\n

Ere with her he would lead his life; <\/span><\/p>\n

And, tho’ he had her in his train, <\/span><\/p>\n

She did a virgin pure remain. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Toward England then that lovely dame <\/span><\/p>\n

The brave St. George conducted strait, <\/span><\/p>\n

An eunuch also with them came, <\/span><\/p>\n

Who did upon the lady wait. <\/span><\/p>\n

These three from Egypt went alone: <\/span><\/p>\n

Now mark St. George’s valour shown. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

When as they in a forest were, <\/span><\/p>\n

The lady did desire to rest: <\/span><\/p>\n

Mean while St. George to kill a deer <\/span><\/p>\n

For their repast did think it best: <\/span><\/p>\n

Leaving her with the eunuch there, <\/span><\/p>\n

Whilst he did go to kill the deer. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

But lo! all in his absence came <\/span><\/p>\n

Two hungry lyons, fierce and fell, <\/span><\/p>\n

And tore the eunuch on the same <\/span><\/p>\n

In pieces small, the truth to tell; <\/span><\/p>\n

Down by the lady then they laid, <\/span><\/p>\n

Whereby they shew’d she was a maid. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

But when he came from hunting back, <\/span><\/p>\n

And did behold this heavy chance, <\/span><\/p>\n

Then for his lovely virgin’s sake <\/span><\/p>\n

His courage strait he did advance, <\/span><\/p>\n

And came into the lions’ sight, <\/span><\/p>\n

Who ran at him with all their might. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Their rage did him no whit dismay, <\/span><\/p>\n

Who, like a stout and valiant knight, <\/span><\/p>\n

Did both the hungry lyons slay <\/span><\/p>\n

Within the lady Sabra’s sight: <\/span><\/p>\n

Who all this while, sad and demure,<\/span><\/p>\n

There stood most like a virgin pure. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Now when St. George did surely know <\/span><\/p>\n

This lady was a virgin true, <\/span><\/p>\n

His heart was glad, that erst was woe, <\/span><\/p>\n

And all his love did soon renew: <\/span><\/p>\n

He set her on a palfrey steed, <\/span><\/p>\n

And towards England came with speed. <\/span><\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

Where being in short space arriv’d <\/span><\/p>\n

Unto his native dwelling place, <\/span><\/p>\n

Therein with his dear love he livd, <\/span><\/p>\n

And fortune did his nuptials grace: <\/span><\/p>\n

They many years of joy did see, <\/span><\/p>\n

And led their lives at Coventry.<\/span><\/p>\n
