The bishops of
\nthe United States have courageously chosen religious freedom as the cultural
\nexpression of our Church’s response to the Holy Father’s call for a Year of Faith.<\/span><\/p>\n

The New York
\nEncounter 2013<\/b>, whose theme will indeed be Freedom – not just religious
\nfreedom, but the experience of what we call “freedom.” The New York
\nEncounter (NYE) is a cultural festival, open to the public which will take
\nplace January 18-20, 2013<\/b> at the Manhattan Center<\/b> (34th Street and 8th Avenue).<\/span><\/p>\n

NYE
\nis an initiative of members of the international Catholic movement Communion
\nand Liberation <\/a>who seek to live the Catholic faith guided by the charism of the
\nServant of God Monsignor Luigi Giussani.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mystery of faith in a secular age is
\nat the heart of his teaching. Following Monsignor Giussani’s example, the
\nmethodology of NYE is based on the experience of our humanity rather than a
\npurely intellectual presentation. As Saint Augustine expressed, it is one of
\n“confession” rather than “presumption.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the various
\nevents, all listed in the enclosed brochure, I would like to emphasize the
\nfollowing two:<\/span><\/p>\n

On Saturday<\/u>, January 19, 2013, at 5:00 p.m.<\/b>, Mr. Paul Bhatti,
\nPakistan’s Minister for National Harmony, will offer an eyewitness account of
\nthe life of his brother Shahbaz Bhatti, the Pakistani Minister for Minority
\nAffairs who was murdered in 2011 for defending religious freedom in his
\ncountry. A real contemporary Catholic martyr!<\/span><\/p>\n

On Sunday<\/u>, January 20, 2013 at
\n2:00 p.m<\/b>. there will be a meeting titled Faith, Soul of Life.  <\/span>In a time when society is no longer
\nChristian, from where do we begin again? Father Julián Carrón, President of the
\nFraternity of Communion and Liberation (who participated in the recent Synod of
\nthe Bishops in Rome), and Father Peter Cameron, OP, Editor-in-Chief of Magnificat,
\nwill address this fundamental question in light of the Pope’s writings for the
\nYear of Faith.<\/span><\/o:p><\/p>\n
