You are not going to find many American Benedictine\u00a0monasteries observing this commemoration. Sad, I think. They will offer the argument that the\u00a0Church&#8217;s November 2nd commemoration of All Souls (and for that matter, All\u00a0Saints) to include the monks and nuns of the Order.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">As a monk noted,\u00a0monasteries who hold this idea are employing &#8220;the same argument that was used\u00a0at the time of the Reformation to eliminate the Commemoration of the Faithful\u00a0Departed, since we are all &#8216;saints.&#8217; Whatever the theological merits of this\u00a0position, <u>even<\/u> the Episcopal Church has recognized its psychological deficit and has\u00a0restored All Souls on November 2.&#8221;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">Old fashioned or not, there is a good value\u00a0in retaining the observances of All Saints and All Souls of Monks and Nuns.\u00a0Informed opinion indicates that when monasteries remember the nuns and monks\u00a0who have gone before us in faith and perseverance, remembers not only persons\u00a0but also puts eschatological hope that eternal life is possible and indeed\u00a0ought to be sought.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">We pray for graces of light, peace and mercy for our departed monks and nuns, sisters and\u00a0oblates ask for their prayers for us.<\/span><!--EndFragment--><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>May the memory of the deceased monks, nuns, sisters, and oblates be eternal.
