Almost 300 monastics will gather in Rome, 17-25\u00a0September 2012, for the international Congress of Benedictine Abbots and\u00a0Conventual Priors at the Primatial\u00a0Abbey of St. Anselm<\/span><\/a> <\/strong>on the Aventine Hill. Preceding the Congress,\u00a0new monastic superiors will participate, 15-16 September 2012, in an\u00a0orientation program. 25 representatives from Communio Internationalis\u00a0Benedictinarum<\/span><\/a><\/strong> (CIB), an association of Benedictine sisters and\u00a0nuns, will also attend the Congress. The Abbot Primate has invited ecumenical\u00a0guests from the Orthodox and Reformed traditions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The two keynote speakers are\u00a0Prof. Michael Hochschild presenting his research on the viability of
\nBenedictine monasteries, and Fr. Michael Casey\u00a0OCSO<\/span><\/a><\/strong> offering a paper on autonomy in Benedictine life. In addition,\u00a0a wide range of workshops will address current topics in monastic life; such\u00a0as, Benedictine identity, stress and burnout, associate membership programs,\u00a0management of monasteries, individualism in the monastery, relationship with\u00a0Benedictine women, new forms of Benedictine presence in society, ecumenism, the\u00a0paschal mystery in the sacred liturgy, new directions for inter-monastic\u00a0dialogue, new structures for AIM, the changing role of the Athen\u00e6um S. Anselmo,the sexual abuse crisis, the role of the abbot, communio in the confederation,and the formation of “traditionalist” candidates.<\/span><\/p>\n

The assembled\u00a0abbots and conventual priors will have the opportunity to visit in pilgrimage\u00a0the monasteries of Subiaco<\/span><\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0Montecassino<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, Norcia<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, and Camaldoli<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, which is\u00a0celebrating its 1000th anniversary this year. Nearly half of the 250 abbots and\u00a0conventual priors will reside in the Collegio S.\u00a0Anselmo<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, with the others, including CIB representatives and\u00a0ecumenical guests, housed in area religious houses and hotels.<\/span><\/p>\n

An important\u00a0item on the agenda is the election of the abbot primate of the Benedictine\u00a0Confederation. According to the Lex Propria of the BenedictineConfederation<\/span><\/a><\/strong>, the abbot primate is elected for an eight-year term,\u00a0and renewable thereafter every four years. There is no term limit to the office\u00a0of abbot primate. The current abbot primate, Dr. Notker Wolf OSB, a monk of St.\u00a0Ottilien Archabbey in Bavaria, is completing 12 years of service, having beenre-elected in 2008.<\/span><\/div>\n
