Berite was admitted to the Order in 1956 and\u00a0was the 78th head of the <a class=\"zem_slink\" title=\"Sovereign Military Order of Malta\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sovereign_Military_Order_of_Malta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener wikipedia\">Sovereign Military Order of Malta<\/a>, the successor of Blessed Gerard.\u00a0Fra&#8217; Andrew was the\u00a0youngest son of the 7th Earl of Abigngdon; both sides of his family has royal\u00a0ties through the centuries. Bertie was educated at Ampleforth Abbey School,\u00a0Christ Church, Oxford and at the School of Oriental and African Studies at the\u00a0University of London. He taught French and Spanish for 23 years at the Worth\u00a0Abbey School, run by the Benedictine monks.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/Bertie%20arms.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mt-image-right\" style=\"float: right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;\" src=\"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/assets_c\/2012\/04\/Bertie arms-thumb-225x283-11443.jpg\" alt=\"Bertie arms.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"283\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">In April 1988, Andrew Bertie was\u00a0elected the Grand Master of the Order of Malta, Fra&#8217; Angelo de Mojana di\u00a0Cologna. It is long known that Fra&#8217;Andrew was followed closely the official<br \/>\nmotto of the order is <i><b>Tuitio Fidei et Obsequium Pauperum<\/b><\/i>, &#8220;Defense of the Faith\u00a0and Service of the Poor.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 12.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">Several years ago the Order of Malta was credited to<br \/>\nhaving about 13, 000 Knights and Dames, 80,000 volunteers (15,000 trained as doctors and nurses), and a presence in 200 hospitals. The Order has an official presence in 120\u00a0countries.
