You also may not know that God wants us to be happy in this life. Period. Can we open our eyes to what true happiness is?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; min-height: 15.0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\">Four levels of happiness that we encounter in our experience:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; min-height: 15.0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: decimal\">\n<li style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline ; letter-spacing: 0.0px\">happiness in a thing<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\">: I need a steak and a bourbon; I need that vacation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha\">\n<li style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\">problem: short-termed pleasure: the flashy new toy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\">we are created more than a designer purse:&nbsp;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\">who&#8217;s measure do we use for happiness?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\">what do we really ask God for?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\">2. as persons <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline ; letter-spacing: 0.0px\">we are more than<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\"> comparative advantage, but we compare ourselves with others<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\">&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; <span class=\"Apple-tab-span\" style=\"white-space:pre\">\t<\/span>a. problem: the &#8220;advantage&#8221; has a limitation; it&#8217;s effectiveness is not long-lasting nor does&nbsp;it account for the truth of who we really are as persons made in God&#8217;s own image<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline ; letter-spacing: 0.0px\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; \">3.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline ; letter-spacing: 0.0px\">finding joy<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\"> in a sincere gift of self &#8230; <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline ; letter-spacing: 0.0px\">to a point<\/span><\/p>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha\">\n<\/ol>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha\">\n<li style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\">problem: when the person to whom our joy is directed leaves, then what happens? Was our serving really sincere? What are the motivations in looking for joy in serving?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12px; \"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; \">4. <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; letter-spacing: 0px; \">union with God<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; \">: the only place where we find true peace, love and happiness; the beloved rests with the lover;<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<ol style=\"list-style-type: lower-alpha\">\n<li style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\">we are restless until our hearts rest in the Lord<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\">God thirsts for you to thirst for Him<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\">what does it do to God when we thirst for a designer purse more than for God?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\">why does a created thing take the priority over the creator?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; min-height: 15.0px\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'\"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0.0px\">We are meant, by God, to be happy in this life and in the next. You may be asking yourself: What are the requirements for attaining true happiness?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; font-size: 1em; font-weight: normal; font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal 'Times New Roman'; \"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; \">Saint Thomas Aquinas will talk about&nbsp;<i>the&nbsp;<\/i>rectitude (the correctness, the rightness) of the will (i.e., supernatural charity) which is&nbsp;<i>an antecedent requirement,&nbsp;<\/i>that is, a requirement before all else.&nbsp; Hence, he wants us to see that before we talk of happiness, we need to determine where our heart is. We ought to ask of ourselves: Is our desire for happiness rooted in the Infinite, in God, or in the created world (money, power and fame)? Aquinas then mentions concomitant requirements&#8211; 2 of them: the absolute and the relative.&nbsp; For&nbsp;<i>the absolute<\/i>&nbsp;Aquinas speaks of the love of God, delight in God, rectitude of our will, the love of the real good that is present in created things; as for&nbsp;<i>the relative<\/i>&nbsp;(subjective) he speaks of bodily delight, friendship with others , especially those who share beatitude, that is, the beatific vision (God in heaven).<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; font-size: 1em; font-weight: normal; font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal 'Times New Roman'; \">\n<ul style=\"margin-top: 0px; font-weight: normal; font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal 'Times New Roman'; \"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; \">While the first point above seems to contradict an earlier point, consider that for Aquinas true, lasting, and perfect happiness exists only with God. So, the Catholic will say that he or she can be happy in this life &#8211;though not perfectly in this life because beatitude comes when we meet God face to face.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; font-size: 1em; font-weight: normal; font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal 'Times New Roman'; \"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; \"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; font-size: 1em; font-weight: normal; font: norm\nal normal normal 12px\/normal 'Times New Roman'; \"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; \">Happiness in this life more than material pleasure, human fulfillment, or satisfaction with all the factors of reality. Happiness in this life exists when the person finally accepts the true nature of oneself and not some artifice, some false self. Self-acceptance from the point of what and how God has made us brings true happiness. A life of sin, broken relationships, frustrated life-plans and the like do not contribute to human flourishing. Let me cite an example: a true and honest friend brings happiness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; font-size: 1em; font-weight: normal; font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal 'Times New Roman'; \"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; \"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; font-size: 1em; font-weight: normal; font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal 'Times New Roman'; \"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; \">So what do we ask of God in prayer? On the other hand, we demand to see the results of our petitions. What is the image of God that motivates our prayer: an instrument to be used? or the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1px; margin-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; font-size: 1em; font-weight: normal; text-align: justify; font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal 'Times New Roman'; min-height: 15px; \"><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 1px; margin-left: 0px; border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-style: initial; border-color: initial; padding-top: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-bottom: 0px; padding-left: 0px; font-size: 1em; font-weight: normal; text-align: justify; font: normal normal normal 12px\/normal 'Times New Roman'; \"><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; \">Are we convinced that &#8220;we do not know how to pray as we ought&#8221;?&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; color: rgb(165, 42, 42); \"><i>[Rom 8:26]<\/i><\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; \">&nbsp;Are we asking God for &#8220;what is good for us&#8221;? Our Father knows what we need before we ask him,&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; color: rgb(165, 42, 42); \"><i>[Cf. Mt 6:8]<\/i><\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; \">&nbsp;but he awaits our petition because the dignity of his children lies in their freedom. We must pray, then, with his Spirit of freedom, to be able truly to know what he wants.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px; color: rgb(165, 42, 42); \"><i>[Cf.
