Dionne, Jr., is not a completely reliable Catholic intellectual, but I think we ought to pay attention to today&#8217;s opinion piece, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/obamas-breach-of-faith-over-contraceptive-ruling\/2012\/01\/29\/gIQAY7V5aQ_story.html?hpid=z3\">Obama&#8217;s breach of faith over contraceptive ruling<\/a>.&#8221; I don&#8217;t agree with all that Dionne posits, but it would be incorrect to dismiss the whole piece because he does have a point for us Catholics to pay close attention to.<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p>One of Barack Obama&#8217;s great attractions as a<br \/>\npresidential candidate was his sensitivity to the feelings and intellectual<br \/>\nconcerns of religious believers. That is why it is so remarkable that he<br \/>\nutterly botched the admittedly difficult question of how contraceptive services<br \/>\nshould be treated under the new health care law.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">His administration mishandled<br \/>\nthis decision not once but twice. In the process, Obama threw his progressive<br \/>\nCatholic allies under the bus and strengthened the hand of those inside the<br \/>\nChurch who had originally sought to derail the health care law.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">This might not<br \/>\nbe so surprising if Obama had presented himself as a conventional secular<br \/>\nliberal. But he has always held himself to a more inclusive standard.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">His<br \/>\ndeservedly celebrated 2006 speech on<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.sojo.net\/press\/obamas-historic-call-renewal-speech\"><span style=\"color:windowtext;text-decoration:none;text-underline:none\"> religion and<br \/>\nAmerican public life<\/span><\/a> was a deeply sophisticated and carefully<br \/>\nbalanced effort to defend the rights of both believers and nonbelievers in a<br \/>\npluralistic republic.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">Obama&#8217;s speech at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/the-press-office\/remarks-president-notre-dame-commencement\"><span style=\"color:windowtext;text-decoration:none;text-underline:none\">Notre Dame&#8217;s<br \/>\ngraduation in 2009<\/span><\/a> was another tour de force. His visit to South<br \/>\nBend was highly controversial among right-wing Catholics. Yet his address<br \/>\ntemporarily silenced many of his critics because it showed an appreciation for<br \/>\nthe Catholic Church&#8217;s contributions to American life &#8212; particularly through its<br \/>\nvast array of social-service and educational institutions &#8212; and an instinctive<br \/>\nfeeling for Catholic sensibilities.<\/span><!--EndFragment-->\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Washington Post&#8217;s E.J.
