Here’s the prayer of His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI on visit to the Ground Zero memorial on 20 April 2008. It is the best prayer to the God of consolation that I know of. I offer it to you for your prayerful solidarity today.<\/i><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\n

O God of love, compassion, and healing,<\/div>\n
look on us, people of many different faiths and traditions,<\/div>\n
who gather today at this site,<\/div>\n
the scene of incredible violence and pain.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n

\n

We ask you in your goodness<\/div>\n
to give eternal light and peace<\/div>\n
to all who died here–<\/div>\n
the heroic first-responders:<\/div>\n
our fire fighters, police officers,<\/div>\n
emergency service workers, and Port Authority personnel,<\/div>\n
along with all the innocent men and women<\/div>\n
who were victims of this tragedy<\/div>\n
simply because their work or service<\/div>\n
brought them here on September 11, 2001.<\/div>\n

We ask you, in your compassion<\/div>\n
to bring healing to those<\/div>\n
who, because of their presence here that day,<\/div>\n
suffer from injuries and illness.<\/div>\n
Heal, too, the pain of still-grieving families<\/div>\n
and all who lost loved ones in this tragedy.<\/div>\n
Give them strength to continue their lives with courage and hope.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n

\n

We are mindful as well<\/div>\n
of those who suffered death, injury, and loss<\/div>\n
on the same day at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.<\/div>\n
Our hearts are one with theirs<\/div>\n
as our prayer embraces their pain and suffering.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n

\n

God of peace, bring your peace to our violent world:<\/div>\n
peace in the hearts of all men and women<\/div>\n
and peace among the nations of the earth.<\/div>\n
Turn to your way of love<\/div>\n
those whose hearts and minds<\/div>\n
are consumed with hatred.<\/div>\n<\/p>\n

God of understanding,<\/div>\n
overwhelmed by the magnitude of this tragedy,<\/div>\n
we seek your light and guidance<\/div>\n
as we confront such terrible events.<\/div>\n
Grant that those whose lives were spared<\/div>\n
may live so that the lives lost here<\/div>\n
may not have been lost in vain.<\/div>\n
Comfort and console us,<\/div>\n
strengthen us in hope,<\/div>\n
and give us the wisdom and courage<\/div>\n
to work tirelessly for a world<\/div>\n
where true peace and love reign<\/div>\n
