{"id":26423,"date":"2011-05-02T14:13:22","date_gmt":"2011-05-02T18:13:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/index.php\/2011\/05\/divine-mercy-known-in-peaceful\/"},"modified":"2011-05-02T14:13:22","modified_gmt":"2011-05-02T18:13:22","slug":"divine-mercy-known-in-peaceful","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/index.php\/2011\/05\/divine-mercy-known-in-peaceful\/","title":{"rendered":"Divine Mercy: known in peaceful embrace of sacramental forgiveness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><i>Continuing for just a moment on the reality of Divine Mercy &#8211;given yesterday&#8217;s feast on the Second Sunday of Easter&#8211; there are few thoughts of Blessed John Paul II&#8217;s that I think are worth reflecting on when, in the canonization homily he delivered for Padre Pio&#8217;s canonization (16 June 2002), he stated:<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;I am the Lord who acts with mercy&#8221; (Jeremiah 9,23)<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/Padre%20Pio%20hearing%20confessions.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Padre Pio hearing confessions.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/assets_c\/2011\/05\/Padre Pio hearing confessions-thumb-300x165-9156.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"165\" class=\"mt-image-right\" style=\"float: right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><i>Padre<br \/>\nPio was a generous dispenser of divine mercy, making himself available to all<br \/>\nby welcoming them, by spiritual direction and, especially, by the<br \/>\nadministration of the sacrament of Penance<\/i>. I also had the privilege, during my<br \/>\nyoung years, of benefiting from his availability for penitents. <u>The ministry of<br \/>\nthe confessional<\/u>, which is one of the distinctive traits of his apostolate,<br \/>\nattracted great crowds of the faithful to the monastery of San Giovanni Rotondo.<br \/>\nEven when that unusual confessor treated pilgrims with apparent severity, the<br \/>\nlatter, becoming <b>conscious of the gravity of sins and sincerely repentant,<br \/>\nalmost always came back for the <u>peaceful embrace of sacramental forgiveness<\/u><\/b>.<br \/>\nMay his example encourage priests to carry out with joy and zeal this ministry<br \/>\nwhich is so important today, as I wished to confirm this year in the Letter to<br \/>\nPriests on the occasion of Holy Thursday.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><i>Perhaps priests &#8211;indeed, all of the faithful&#8211; ought to review the Holy Father&#8217;s Holy Thursday 2002 letter to priests. I once made a statement: Don&#8217;t trust a priest who doesn&#8217;t regularly sit in the confession box.
