Scholasticism<br \/>\nadvocates that we always distinguish. Benedict XVI will be beatifying his<br \/>\nfriend, colleague and boss, Pope John Paul II on May 1. So, the faithful are<br \/>\nasking what&#8217;s the difference between the ecclesial acts of beatification and<br \/>\ncanonization?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; \">The Holy See told us what&#8217;s considered to be the distinguishing<br \/>\nmarks of any beatification. There are three differences:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; \">location of dioceses<br \/>\nthat can hold annual public liturgical celebrations in the holy person&#8217;s honor;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; \">who ceremonially requests the pope to act;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: 'Times New Roman'; \">and the level of papal authority<br \/>\ninvolved in the proclamation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;\">What Pope Benedict has worked hard to remind the<br \/>\nChurch, &#8220;at a beatification ceremony, the bishop of the diocese where the<br \/>\nperson dies asks that the candidate be declared blessed; at a canonization, the<br \/>\nprefect of the Congregation for Saints&#8217; Causes speaks in the name of the whole<br \/>\nchurch and asks that the candidate be declared a saint.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;\">But a central<br \/>\ndifference between a beatification and canonization is that with a canonization<br \/>\nthere is an act of declaring dogmatically, that God has revealed this person<br \/>\nwith Him in beatitude. Essentially, it is a matter of papal infallibility.<br \/>\nBeing a saint is a dogmatic statement; being a blessed is not. A saint can be<br \/>\nliturgically commemorated at the sacred Liturgy worldwide and remembered in<br \/>\nother circumstances like naming buildings after the person. When the Church<br \/>\nsays a person is a blessed, it is an administrative act of the papal office; a<br \/>\nblessed can be liturgically commemorated is limited to certain circumstances,<br \/>\nlike where the person lives or in the houses of the religious congregation<br \/>\nshould the person be a religious.<o:p><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Subtle differences need certain light in a canonization process.
