{"id":26046,"date":"2010-12-14T13:23:47","date_gmt":"2010-12-14T17:23:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/index.php\/2010\/12\/orthodox-christians-in-the-usa\/"},"modified":"2010-12-14T13:23:47","modified_gmt":"2010-12-14T17:23:47","slug":"orthodox-christians-in-the-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/index.php\/2010\/12\/orthodox-christians-in-the-usa\/","title":{"rendered":"Orthodox Christians in the USA grow 16% in a decade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Times;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">Whitney Jones for ENI, wrote that &#8220;America&#8217;s Eastern<br \/>\nOrthodox Parishes have grown 16% in the past decade, in part because of a<br \/>\nsettled immigrant community according to new research.&#8221; Her article follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Times;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Times;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">Alexei<br \/>\nKrindatch, research consultant for the Standing Conference of the Canonical<br \/>\nOrthodox Bishops in the Americas, said the 16 percent growth in the number of <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes\">&nbsp;<\/span>Orthodox parishes is &#8220;a fairly high<br \/>\nratio for religious groups in the United States,&#8221; Religion News Service<br \/>\nreports.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Times;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Times;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">The number of Orthodox parishes has reached 2,370, and the Orthodox<br \/>\ncommunity in America consists of more than 1 million adherents across 20<br \/>\ndifferent church bodies, according to the 2010 U.S. Orthodox Census.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Times;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/orthodox%20clergy.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"orthodox clergy.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/assets_c\/2010\/12\/orthodox clergy-thumb-275x190-7940.jpg\" width=\"275\" height=\"190\" class=\"mt-image-left\" style=\"float: left; margin: 0 20px 20px 0;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Times;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">The top<br \/>\nfive largest Orthodox churches in the United States are Greek Orthodox<br \/>\n(476,900), Orthodox Church in America (84,900), Antiochian Orthodox (74,600),<br \/>\nSerbian Orthodox (68,800) and Russian Orthodox (27,700).<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Times;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Times;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">Two of these church<br \/>\nbodies &#8211; the Bulgarian Orthodox Eastern Diocese and the Romanian Orthodox<br \/>\nArchdiocese &#8211; experienced a growth rate of more than 100 percent. Both churches<br \/>\nbegan with a small number of parishes in 2000 and are supported by a community<br \/>\nof established eastern European immigrants.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Times; \">&#8220;It takes immigrant communities a little while to establish a religious community,&#8221; Krindatch said. &#8220;They settle, then begin to think about their religious lives.&#8221; Even though the majority of Orthodox church bodies grew, some lost parishes.&nbsp;<span>&nbsp;<\/span>The Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, Patriarchal Parishes of the Russian Orthodox Church and Armenian Apostolic Church of America all experienced a slight decrease in the number of parishes.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Times; \"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Times; \">The study, which was part of the national Religious Congregations and Membership Study 2010, also shows that just 27 percent of Orthodox members attend churches regularly. Krindatch said the definition of each of the groups affected this statistic.
