\"JHN<\/a>O God, the source of wisdom’s fire,<\/p>\n

Who formed the mind of man<\/p>\n

In complex and mysterious ways<\/p>\n

Within Your loving plan,<\/p>\n

We thank You now for calling forth<\/p>\n

This priest who praised Your Name<\/p>\n

By teaching and exalting you<\/p>\n

In words of living flame.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

John Henry Newman, England’s son,<\/p>\n

Was formed in Oxford’s halls,<\/p>\n

Endowed with tow’ring intellect<\/p>\n

To answer all the calls<\/p>\n

Which Church and University<\/p>\n

Gave forth in times of doubt,<\/p>\n

A rebirth of the ancient truths<\/p>\n

As rain for minds in drought.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He served the Church of England well<\/p>\n

With scholarship and grace,<\/p>\n

Restoring ancient roots of faith,<\/p>\n

Removing error’s trace.<\/p>\n

But scorned by leaders of his time,<\/p>\n

He left his Oxford home,<\/p>\n

In search of kindly, leading light<\/p>\n

Which led him on toward Rome.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Attracted by St. Philip’s work,<\/p>\n

He joined that band of men,<\/p>\n

And as an Oratorian,<\/p>\n

He worked with voice and pen,<\/p>\n

That heart to heart might ever speak,<\/p>\n

Revealing Christ’s own truth,<\/p>\n

Unfolding doctrine’s mysteries<\/p>\n

For elder and for youth.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

As had his Master, Newman found<\/p>\n

Suspicion, scorn, and hate;<\/p>\n

From those he left and those he joined,<\/p>\n

Which nothing could abate;<\/p>\n

Yet, undeterred, he struggled on<\/p>\n

Beneath this cross’s weight<\/p>\n

Through shadows and imaginings<\/p>\n

To God’s own truth so great.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

O God of subtle craft and mind,<\/p>\n

O only Source of light,<\/p>\n

O Father, Son, and Spirit blest,<\/p>\n

Our strength in truth’s own fight:<\/p>\n

We give you thanks for blessed John,<\/p>\n

Who leads us still this day:<\/p>\n

With him, let us in faithfulness<\/p>\n

Still walk in Truth’s own way.<\/p>\n
