For Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Christians, today is “Clean Monday,”
\nthe first day of the Great Fast. In many of these churches, the faithful will
\ngather tonight for the service of Compline with the singing of a portion of the
\n“Penitential Canon,” also known as the “Great Canon of St.
\nAndrew of Crete.” The <\/i>First Ode of the Great Canon uses as a springboard
\nthe text of the Canticle of Moses contained in Exodus 15: 1-19. The
\nsinging of the Great Canon in the First Week of the Great Fast, is intended to
\ninvoke compunction in the penitent heart.<\/i><\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

(Irmos) A Helper
\nand Protector has become salvation to me.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is my God; I
\nwill glorify Him.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

God of my fathers,
\nI will exalt Him;<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

for in glory has He
\nbeen glorified!<\/span><\/p>\n

Refrain<\/i><\/font><\/p>\n

Glory to You, our
\nGod, glory to You!<\/b><\/i> (or the refrain changes to<\/span> “Have mercy on me, O God,
\nhave mercy on me!” when sung at Compline in the first of the Fast)<\/span><\/p>\n

Where shall I begin
\nto lament the deeds of my wretched life?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

What first-fruits
\nshall I offer, O Christ, for my present lamentation?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

But in your
\ncompassion, grant me release from my sins.<\/span><\/p>\n

Glory to You…<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Come, wretched
\nsoul,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

with your flesh
\nconfess to the Creator of All.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

In future, refrain
\nfrom your former brutishness<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

and offer to God
\ntears in repentance.<\/span><\/p>\n

Glory to You…<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Having rivaled the
\nfirst-made Adam in my transgressions,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

I realize that I am
\nstripped naked of God<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

and of the
\neverlasting kingdom of bliss through my sins.<\/span><\/p>\n

Glory to You…<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Alas, wretched
\nsoul!<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Why are you like
\nthe first Eve?<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

For you have
\nwickedly looked and been bitterly wounded,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

and you have
\ntouched the tree<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

and rashly tasted
\nthe forbidden fruit.  (cf Gen. 3:6)<\/span><\/p>\n

Glory to You…<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The place of bodily
\nEve has been taken<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

by the Eve of my
\nmind,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

in the shape of a
\npassionate thought in the flesh,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

showing me sweet
\nthings<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

yet ever making me
\ntaste bitter things.<\/span><\/p>\n

Glory to You…<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Adam was rightly
\nexiled from Eden<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

for not keeping
\nYour one commandment.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

O Savior, what
\nshall I suffer,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

who am always rejecting
\nYour living words? (cf. Gen. 3:26\/Acts 7:38)<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Glory to the Father
\nand to the Son and to the Holy Spirit!<\/span><\/p>\n

Trinity adored in
\nUnity,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

take from me the
\nheavy yoke of sin,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

and in Your
\ncompassion,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

grant me tears of
\ncompunction.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now and ever and
\nforever. Amen.<\/span><\/p>\n

O Theotokos,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

hope and
\nintercessor of those who sing to you,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

take from me the
\nheavy yoke of sin,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

and as you are our
\npure Lady,<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

accept me that
\nrepents.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
