I typically find the questions interesting because it seems like we have forgotten the reasons why we adore the eucharistic Presence of Jesus Christ and this experience of eucharistic adoration is key for every Catholic and for every parish, school, hospital, convent, abbey, etc.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Garamond, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\" size=\"4\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">When questions arise about the character of Adoration<br \/>\nof the Blessed Sacrament we should go to the liturgical book called <i>Holy<br \/>\nCommunion and Worship of the Eucharist Outside Mass<\/i>. While it does not provide<br \/>\ndetails about what ought or ought not be done at Adoration, it does provide a<br \/>\nliturgical theology by which we follow.&nbsp;There it says that&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Garamond, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\" size=\"4\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 16px; \"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">Exposition of<br \/>\nthe Holy Eucharist is intended to acknowledge Christ&#8217;s marvelous presence in<br \/>\nthe sacrament.&nbsp;Exposition invites us to the spiritual union with him that<br \/>\nculminates in sacramental communion.&nbsp;Thus it fosters very well the worship<br \/>\nwhich is due to Christ in spirit and in truth.&nbsp;This kind of exposition<br \/>\nmust clearly express the cult of the blessed sacrament in its relationship to<br \/>\nthe Mass.&nbsp; The plan of the exposition should carefully avoid anything<br \/>\nwhich might somehow obscure the principal desire of Christ in instituting the<br \/>\nEucharist, namely, to be with us as food, medicine, and comfort&#8221; (n.82).<\/span><\/div>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Garamond, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\" size=\"4\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">Therefore,<br \/>\nwe can reason that devotions, songs, prayers, etc., ought&nbsp;to be consistent<br \/>\nwith what is given in this book.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Garamond, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\" size=\"4\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">The <i>Directory on Popular Piety and the<br \/>\nLiturgy: Principles and Guidelines<\/i>&nbsp;does offer examples of what is<br \/>\nconsistent with the purposes of Eucharistic adoration.&nbsp;It says:&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Garamond, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\" size=\"4\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">The<br \/>\nfaithful should be encouraged to read the Scriptures during these periods of<br \/>\nadoration, since they afford an unrivalled source of prayer. &nbsp;Suitable<br \/>\nhymns and canticles based on those of the Liturgy of the Hours and the<br \/>\nliturgical seasons could also be encouraged, as well as periods of silent<br \/>\nprayer and reflection. &nbsp;Gradually, the faithful should be encouraged not<br \/>\nto do other devotional exercises during exposition of the Blessed Sacrament.<br \/>\n&nbsp;Given the close relationship between Christ and Our Lady, the rosary can<br \/>\nalways be of assistance in giving prayer a Christological orientation, since it<br \/>\ncontains meditation of the Incarnation and the Redemption (n.165).<\/span><\/div>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Garamond, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\" size=\"4\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">This list of practices is not exhaustive, and it is not meant to be but it does give a useful sense of how to<br \/>\nevaluate our devotional practices during Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.<\/span><!--EndFragment-->\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Periodically people ask about the practice of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
