{"id":25095,"date":"2009-11-18T10:15:15","date_gmt":"2009-11-18T14:15:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/index.php\/2009\/11\/deaf-catholics-finding-room-fo\/"},"modified":"2009-11-18T10:15:15","modified_gmt":"2009-11-18T14:15:15","slug":"deaf-catholics-finding-room-fo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/index.php\/2009\/11\/deaf-catholics-finding-room-fo\/","title":{"rendered":"Deaf Catholics: finding room for the deaf in the Church"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">From a recent Zenit news article, I learned something that I never knew before: &#8220;It is estimated that there are 1.3 million deaf Catholics,<br \/>\nand the Vatican is intent on ensuring that they can fully participate in the<br \/>\nChurch.&#8221;&nbsp;Archbishop Zygmunt Zimowski,<br \/>\npresident of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/roman_curia\/pontifical_councils\/hlthwork\/index.htm\">Pontifical Council for Health Care Ministry<\/a>, gave this statistic at his department&#8217;s 24th international conference meeting this week in Rome.&nbsp;The conference&#8217;s theme is &#8220;Ephphata: the Deaf<br \/>\nPerson in the Life of the Church.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&#8220;The prelate,&#8221; according to Zenit said, &#8220;estimated that in developed countries, one child<br \/>\nout of 1,000 is deaf, but the problem is more serious in poor countries, where<br \/>\n80% of the world&#8217;s deaf live.
