{"id":25034,"date":"2009-10-31T06:24:38","date_gmt":"2009-10-31T10:24:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/index.php\/2009\/10\/vatican-press-office-clarifies\/"},"modified":"2009-10-31T06:24:38","modified_gmt":"2009-10-31T10:24:38","slug":"vatican-press-office-clarifies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/index.php\/2009\/10\/vatican-press-office-clarifies\/","title":{"rendered":"Vatican Press Office clarifies some issues on Anglican entrance into full communion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><i>The Pope&#8217;s press officer, Jesuit Father Federico<br \/>\nLombardi, addressed issues regarding the forthcoming Apostolic Constitution on<br \/>\nPersonal Ordinariates for the Anglicans entering full communion with the<br \/>\nCatholic Church this today:<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Garamond, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\" size=\"4\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">There has been widespread speculation, based on<br \/>\nsupposedly knowledgeable remarks by an Italian correspondent Andrea Tornielli,<br \/>\nthat the delay in publication of the Apostolic Constitution regarding Personal<br \/>\nOrdinariates for Anglicans entering into full communion with the Catholic<br \/>\nChurch, announced on October 20, 2009, by Cardinal William Levada, Prefect of<br \/>\nthe Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, is due to more than<br \/>\n&#8220;technical&#8221; reasons. According to this speculation, there is a<br \/>\nserious substantial issue at the basis of the delay, namely, disagreement about<br \/>\nwhether celibacy will be the norm for the future clergy of the Provision.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Garamond, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\" size=\"4\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">Cardinal<br \/>\nLevada offered the following comments on this speculation: &#8220;Had I been<br \/>\nasked I would happily have clarified any doubt about my remarks at the press<br \/>\nconference. There is no substance to such speculation. No one at the Vatican<br \/>\nhas mentioned any such issue to me. The delay is purely technical in the sense<br \/>\nof ensuring consistency in canonical language and references. The translation<br \/>\nissues are secondary; the decision not to delay publication in order to wait<br \/>\nfor the &#8216;official&#8217; Latin text to be published in <i>Acta Apostolicae Sedis<\/i> was<br \/>\nmade some time ago.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Garamond, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\" size=\"4\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">The drafts prepared by the working group, and submitted for<br \/>\nstudy and approval through the usual process followed by the Congregation, have<br \/>\nall included the following statement, currently Article VI of the<br \/>\nConstitution:<\/span><\/p>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Garamond, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\" size=\"4\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><i>&sect;1 Those who ministered as Anglican deacons, priests, or bishops,<br \/>\nand who fulfill the requisites established by canon law and are not impeded by<br \/>\nirregularities or other impediments may be accepted by the Ordinary as<br \/>\ncandidates for Holy Orders in the Catholic Church. In the case of married<br \/>\nministers, the norms established in the Encyclical Letter of Pope Paul VI<br \/>\n<\/i>Sacerdotalis coelibatus<i>, n. 42 and in the Statement &#8220;In June&#8221; are to<br \/>\nbe observed. Unmarried ministers must submit to the norm of clerical celibacy<br \/>\nof CIC can. 277, &sect;1.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Garamond, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\" size=\"4\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\"><i>&sect;2. The Ordinary, in full observance of the discipline of<br \/>\ncelibate clergy in the Latin Church, as a rule (pro regula) will admit only<br \/>\ncelibate men to the order of presbyter. He may also petition the Roman Pontiff,<br \/>\nas a derogation from can. 277, &sect;1, for the admission of married men to the<br \/>\norder of presbyter on a case by case basis, according to objective criteria<br \/>\napproved by the Holy See.<\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<div><font class=\"Apple-style-span\" face=\"Garamond, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\" size=\"4\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Garamond;\nmso-ansi-language:EN-US\">This article is to be understood as consistent with<br \/>\nthe current practice of the Church, in which married former Anglican ministers<br \/>\nmay be admitted to priestly ministry in the Catholic Church on a case by case<br \/>\nbasis. With regard to future seminarians, it was considered purely speculative<br \/>\nwhether there might be some cases in which a dispensation from the celibacy<br \/>\nrule might be petitioned.
