Can anyone think of Clare without Francis? Is it possible to conceive of the mendicant orders without the witness of Saint Clare? Saint Clare of Assisi is a pivotal figure in Catholic
\nspirituality and religious life that I think she’s been studied and followed by
\nvery few. James Thompson, a composer of sacred music, wrote the following piece
\non Clare which deserves our attention. I have posted Thompson’s texts here before
\nwith the thought that they provide food for thought and<\/span> prayer. He captures
\nwell the spirit and life of this companion of Francis.<\/i> <\/span><\/p>\n

O Light from Light,
\nall splendor’s Source,<\/span><\/div>\n
Whose clear beams shine with heaven’s joy,<\/span><\/div>\n
We give
\nYou thanks for Mother Clare<\/span><\/div>\n
And ev’ry form of praise employ.<\/span><\/div>\n

Enticed by
\nFrancis’ preaching sweet,<\/span><\/div>\n

Christ Crucified became her Spouse;<\/span><\/div>\n
She gathered
\nsisters to her side<\/span><\/div>\n
Where Poverty would grace the house.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n
She left behind
\nall earthly gain<\/span><\/div>\n
That riches true might be her all;<\/span><\/div>\n
In poverty, obedience,<\/span><\/div>\n
And
\nchastity she heard Christ’s call.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n
As mother to her flock, she lived<\/span><\/div>\n
And
\nmodeled Christ to ev’ryone;<\/span><\/div>\n
In loving service spent herself<\/span><\/div>\n
In toil from dawn
\nto setting sun.<\/span><\/div>\n

<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n
As she has shown us, Lord,<\/span><\/div>\n
Your way, So give us grace like her
\nto be,<\/span><\/div>\n
That we may turn from self to You<\/span><\/div>\n
And in your Way be truly free.<\/span><\/div>\n

Most
\nhigh, omnipotent, good God,<\/span><\/div>\n
O Father, Son and Spirit blest,<\/span><\/div>\n
With Mother Clare
\nand all your saints Bring us,<\/span><\/div>\n
