{"id":24671,"date":"2009-06-04T10:30:00","date_gmt":"2009-06-04T14:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/index.php\/2009\/06\/the-first-principle-and-founda\/"},"modified":"2014-07-17T10:18:58","modified_gmt":"2014-07-17T14:18:58","slug":"the-first-principle-and-founda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/index.php\/2009\/06\/the-first-principle-and-founda\/","title":{"rendered":"First Principle and Foundation: a fundamental spiritual teaching of Loyola"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The goal of our life is to live with God forever.\u00a0God who loves us, gave us life.\u00a0Our own response of love allows God&#8217;s life to flow into\u00a0us without limit.<\/p>\n<p>All the things in this world are gifts of God, presented to us so that we can\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">know God more easily and make a return of love more readily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As a result, we appreciate and use all of these gifts of God insofar as they help us develop as loving persons.<\/p>\n<p>But if any of these gifts become the center of our lives, they displace God and so hinder our growth toward our goal.<\/p>\n<p>In everyday life, then, we must hold ourselves in balance before all of these created gifts insofar as we have a choice and are not bound by some obligation.<\/p>\n<p>We should not fix our desires on health or sickness, wealth or poverty, success or\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">failure, a long life or short one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For everything has the potential of calling forth in us a deeper response to our life in God.<\/p>\n<p>Our only desire and our one choice should be this: I want and I choose what better\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">leads to the deepening of God&#8217;s life in me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Saint Ignatius of Loyola<br \/>\n<em>Spiritual Exercises<\/em> (a new trans.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The goal of our life is to live with God forever.\u00a0God who loves us, gave us life.\u00a0Our own response of love allows God&#8217;s life to flow into\u00a0us without limit.
