He was a daily communicant and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nafra-sfo.org\/\">Secular Franciscan<\/a>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;\">At the time of<br \/>\nhis death at age 36, Blessed J&auml;gerst&auml;tter left behind a widow and 3 small<br \/>\ndaughters. Interestingly both his priest and his bishop urged him to give up<br \/>\nhis conscientious objection, and join the army; his sacrifice was regarded as<br \/>\nfolly by his neighbors. The chaplain who saw J&auml;gerst&auml;tter to his death related<br \/>\nthat J&auml;gerst&auml;tter said, &#8220;I am completely bound in inner union with the Lord.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;\">Reflecting upon<br \/>\nthe context of his life he said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">The situation in<br \/>\nwhich we Christians of Germany find ourselves today is much more bewildering<br \/>\nthan that faced by the Christians of the early centuries at the time of their<br \/>\nbloodiest persecution &#8230; We are not dealing with a small matter, but the great<br \/>\n(apocalyptic) life and death struggle has already begun. Y<\/span>et in the midst of it<br \/>\nthere are many who still go on living their lives as though nothing had changed<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic;\"><br \/>\n&#8230; <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">That we Catholics must make ourselves told of the worst and most dangerous<br \/>\nanti-Christian power that has ever existed is something that I cannot and never<br \/>\nwill believe<\/span> &#8230; Many actually believe quite simply that things have to be the<br \/>\nway they are. If this should happen to mean that they are obliged to commit<br \/>\ninjustice, then they believe that others are responsible. &#8230; <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">I am convinced that<br \/>\nit is still best that I speak the truth even though it costs me my life<\/span>.
