{"id":24597,"date":"2009-04-30T12:30:55","date_gmt":"2009-04-30T16:30:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/index.php\/2009\/04\/glendons-daughter-comments\/"},"modified":"2009-04-30T12:30:55","modified_gmt":"2009-04-30T16:30:55","slug":"glendons-daughter-comments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/index.php\/2009\/04\/glendons-daughter-comments\/","title":{"rendered":"Glendon&#8217;s Daughter Comments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic;\">Yesterday (April 29, 2009),&nbsp;Tom McFeely, of the&nbsp;<\/span>National Catholic Register<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-style: italic;\"> posted a brief story relating the &#8220;back story&#8221; to Mary Ann Glendon&#8217;s declining the Laetare Medal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/Liz%20Lev.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Liz Lev.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/Liz Lev-thumb-250x178.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"178\" class=\"mt-image-right\" style=\"float: right; margin: 0 0 20px 20px;\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Catholic writer and art historian <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elizabethlev.com\/\"><span style=\"color:windowtext;text-decoration:\nnone;text-underline:none\">Elizabeth Lev<\/span><\/a> is Mary Ann Glendon&#8217;s<br \/>\ndaughter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">In <a href=\"http:\/\/www.politicsdaily.com\/2009\/04\/29\/why-mom-turned-down-notre-dame-award-over-obama-honors\/\"><span style=\"color:windowtext;text-decoration:none;text-underline:none\">a post <\/span><\/a>at<br \/>\nPoliticsDaily.com, Lev &#8212; who lives in Rome and is a regular contributor to<br \/>\nZenit news service &#8212; discusses her mother&#8217;s decision to refuse to accept Notre<br \/>\nDame&#8217;s Laetare Medal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Lev explains that Glendon&#8217;s action, undertaken because of<br \/>\nNotre Dame&#8217;s honoring of pro-abortion President Barack Obama, <span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">must be<br \/>\nconsidered in the context of Glendon&#8217;s proven commitment to defending the human<br \/>\nrights of all vulnerable people, born and unborn<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">And, Lev said, in light of that commitment it&#8217;s silly to<br \/>\ndismiss her mother&#8217;s principled action as merely a gesture by someone who cares<br \/>\nonly about the pro-life cause.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o:p><\/o:p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&#8220;Professor Glendon was to have been honored for n<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ot only for<br \/>\nher scholarship, but for her second career, her pro-bono work<\/span> &#8212; ranging from<br \/>\nthe civil rights movement of the 1960s to the great civil rights issues of the<br \/>\npresent day &#8212; namely, the defense of human life from conception to natural<br \/>\ndeath,&#8221; writes Lev. &#8220;Her concerns range from the aging and dying population to<br \/>\nthe unborn to the well-being and dignity of every life, regardless of race,<br \/>\nreligion, or economic status.
