What&nbsp;surely&nbsp;mark us believers in God who loves and sustains us? Can you identify the point of&nbsp;a relationship with the Incarnate God?<\/strong><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 12pt\"><font color=\"#000000\"><\/font><font face=\"Garamond\"><br \/>&#8220;The person believes in and is devoted to the person of Jesus Christ<br \/>and accepts Jesus as Lord and Savior.<br \/>An understanding that some suffering is a part of life<br \/>and that crosses have to be carried under difficult circumstances.<br \/>A conviction that our life here is only a small part of our life,<br \/>that this is not as good as it gets &#8211;there is a resurrection for each one of us.<br \/>A commitment to be a person of forgiveness &#8212;<br \/>A commitment to non-violence and justice for others<br \/>A fundamental respect and love for people and for all of creation. <br \/>A lively sense of the presence of Christ in our world,<br \/>in the poor, in the sick, in the weak, in the prisoner,<br \/>in those who are hungry and thirsty, in the stranger,<br \/>in short, that Christ is present in those whom our world disregards, and would just like to get rid of.<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 12pt\"><font color=\"#000000\"><\/font><font face=\"Garamond\"><\/font><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 12pt\"><font color=\"#000000\"><\/font><font face=\"Garamond\"><br \/>\n<span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"DISPLAY: inline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/Ash%20Wednesday%20Australia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mt-image-right\" style=\"FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 20px 20px\" height=\"300\" alt=\"Ash Wednesday Australia.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/Ash%20Wednesday%20Australia-thumb-220x300.jpg\" width=\"220\" \/><\/a><\/span>Does this sound radical? Difficult? Off the edge?<br \/>It is, all of the above.<br \/>Fortunately, Christians are not born, they are made.<br \/>They are made by the work of the Holy Spirit.<br \/>From ashes to fire &#8211;from Ash Wednesday to Pentecost &#8211;the whole Church,<br \/>not just me as an individual in my own little box,<br \/>the whole Church prays and works with those<br \/>who are preparing for baptism at the Easter Vigil.<br \/><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 12pt\"><font color=\"#000000\"><\/font><font face=\"Garamond\">And the fifty days of Easter are a time when<br \/>Christians savor the readings about the early Christian churches<br \/>and the blessings of the gift of the Holy Spirit.<br \/>This whole span of days from Ash Wednesday to Pentecost<br \/>is a special time of formation for Christians?<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 12pt\"><font color=\"#000000\"><\/font><font face=\"Garamond\">Easter and Pentecost are about our death and resurrection in Christ,<br \/>our Passover from death to life in his Passover,<br \/>through water and the Holy Spirit in baptism.<br \/><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 12pt\"><font color=\"#000000\"><\/font><font face=\"Garamond\">Lent is our annual retreat,<br \/>our annual re-entry into the catechumenate,<br \/>in order to reflect on, affirm, remember,<br \/>and re-claim that baptism.<br \/>For baptism is the sacramental center out of which we live.<br \/>It is the watery Spirit-filled womb and tomb<br \/>to which we are called to return time and time again.<br \/>Becoming a Christian means stability in Christ our Rock,<br \/>but always being on the move;<br \/>sure of our identity in Christ,<br \/>but still always seemingly wet from the waters of baptism.<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 12pt\"><font color=\"#000000\"><\/font><font face=\"Garamond\"><\/font><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 12pt\"><font color=\"#000000\"><\/font><font face=\"Garamond\">Sometimes when we think of Lent we think of penance.<br \/>And penance, to our modem sensibility, has a negative, pinched quality about it. <br \/>However, <em>penance<\/em> comes from the Latin<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 12pt\"><font color=\"#000000\"><\/font><font face=\"Garamond\"><em>paenitentia <\/em>that comes from the Greek metanoia.<br \/>And metanoia means to change one&#8217;s heart, one&#8217;s mind.<br \/>It means to be converted.<br \/>It means claiming the full meaning of being baptized into Christ;<br \/>claiming that new birth, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit.<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 12pt\"><font color=\"#000000\"><\/font><font face=\"Garamond\">If there ever was a person who made baptism the very center of his life,<br \/>it was Martin Luther.<br \/>When he was plagued by doubt, or tempted to despair,<br \/>he would trace the sign of the cross on his forehead and say, &#8220;I have been baptized.&#8221;<br \/>No matter what happened, through Christ God had claimed him.<br \/>As you sign the forehead of the person next to you with ashes,<br \/>you are reminding the person<br \/>that no matter what happens,<br \/>he or she has been claimed by God through baptism.<o:p><\/o:p><\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 12pt\"><font color=\"#000000\"><\/font><font face=\"Garamond\"><\/font><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 12pt\"><font color=\"#000000\"><\/font><font face=\"Garamond\">Each one of us wants to live the Gospel in such as a way<br \/>that it is crystal clear that Christ is the center of our existence.<br \/><\/font><\/span><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 12pt\"><br \/><font face=\"Garamond\" color=\"#000000\">Abbot John Klassen, OSB<\/font><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font face=\"Garamond\" color=\"#000000\">The Abbey of Saint John<br \/><\/font><font color=\"#000000\"><\/font><font face=\"Garamond\"><st1:date Month=\"2\" Day=\"13\" Year=\"2002\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 12pt\">February 13, 2002<\/span><\/st1:date><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt\"><font color=\"#000000\"><\/font><font face=\"Garamond\"><st1:date Month=\"2\" Day=\"13\" Year=\"2002\"><span style=\"FONT-SIZE: 12pt\"><em>adapted by this blogger<\/em><\/span><\/st1:date><\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you fast, be not as hypocrites, of a sad countenance.
