{"id":24359,"date":"2009-02-23T20:03:43","date_gmt":"2009-02-24T00:03:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/index.php\/2009\/02\/belmont-abbey-hosts-gathering\/"},"modified":"2013-10-18T11:31:31","modified_gmt":"2013-10-18T15:31:31","slug":"belmont-abbey-hosts-gathering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/index.php\/2009\/02\/belmont-abbey-hosts-gathering\/","title":{"rendered":"Belmont Abbey hosts gathering of monks &#038; sisters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Today 2 novices and a junior with the novice master from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/mepkinabbey.org\/wordpress\/\"><strong>Mepkin Abbey<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>(the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ocso.org\/\">Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance<\/a><\/strong>), a novice from the South-Central Mother House of the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sisters_of_Mercy\">Religious Sisters of Mercy<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and the 2 novices from\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.belmontabbey.org\/\">Belmont Abbey<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0came together for friendship and study. The symposia has\u00a0been\u00a0devoted to the study of the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/archive\/ENG1104\/_INDEX.HTM\">1983 Code of Canon Law<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0as it pertains to religious life. The course is taught by Religious Sister of Mercy Sister Jean Margaret.\u00a0The retired bishop of\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlottediocese.org\/\">Charlotte<\/a><\/strong>, Bishop William Curlin, 81,\u00a0gave a talk on the inter-relation of Canon Law, religious and bishops.\u00a0His Excellency was\u00a0the bishop of this diocese from 1994-2002; previously he was an auxiliary bishop of Washington, DC. Experience tells us\u00a0that it&#8217;s\u00a0important that some study of the Church&#8217;s Law happens during formation (and perhaps even later in life) so that one knows the boundaries of what is and is not possible for people in religious life.<\/p>\n<p>All were here this afternoon and evening for a visit to the campus, dinner and Vespers.
