The <a href=\"http:\/\/iya2009.org\/\">International Year of Astronomy<\/a> (IYA) proposes to observe the 400th anniversary of Galileo&#8217;s first astronomical use of the telescope.<\/p>\n<p>The goals of the IYA 2009 are to:<\/p>\n<p>Increase scientific awareness;<\/p>\n<p>Promote widespread access to new knowledge and observing experiences;<\/p>\n<p>Support and improve formal and informal science education;<\/p>\n<p>Provide a modern image of science and scientists;<\/p>\n<p>Facilitate new networks and strengthen existing ones;<\/p>\n<p>Facilitate the preservation and protection of the world&#8217;s cultural and natural heritage of dark skies in places such as urban oases, national parks and astronomical sites.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><br \/>\n<span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"DISPLAY: inline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/Galileo%20Presenting%20Scopel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"mt-image-right\" style=\"FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 20px 20px\" height=\"216\" alt=\"Galileo Presenting Scopel.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/communio.stblogs.org\/Galileo%20Presenting%20Scopel-thumb-250x216.jpg\" width=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/span>Some interesting things<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vaticanobservatory.org\/\">The Vatican Observatory<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.astronomy2009.va\/\">Astronomy 2009<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.euresis.org\/en\/Dettaglio_Mostre.aspx?id=23\">Galileo 2009<\/a> sponsored by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.euresis.org\/en\/Homepage.aspx\">Euresis<\/a>, an Association for the Promotion of Scientific Endeavor<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.100hoursofastronomy.org\/\">100 Hours of Astonomy<\/a> 2-5 April 2009<\/p>\n<p>The January 6<sup>th<\/sup>, 2009 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.astronomy2009.va\/http:\/\/www.vatican.va\/holy_father\/benedict_xvi\/homilies\/2009\/documents\/hf_ben-xvi_hom_20090106_epifania_en.html\">homily<\/a> of Pope Benedict mentioning the IYA 2009&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/vaticanobservatory.org\/News_PB_IYA.html\">Reflections<\/a> by Brother Guy Consolmagno, S.J., on the Pope&#8217;s salute to those participating in the IYA 2009<\/p>\n<p>A.
