A Nocturnal upon St. Lucy’s Day <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

‘Tis the year’s midnight, and it is the day’s, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Lucy’s, who scarce seven hours herself unmasks; <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

         The sun is spent, and now his flasks <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

         Send forth light squibs, no constant rays; <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

                The world’s whole sap is sunk; <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

The general balm th’ hydroptic earth hath drunk, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Whither, as to the bed’s feet, life is shrunk, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Dead and interr’d; yet all these seem to laugh, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Compar’d with me, who am their epitaph. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Study me then, you who shall lovers be <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

At the next world, that is, at the next spring; <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

         For I am every dead thing, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

         In whom Love wrought new alchemy. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

                For his art did express <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

A quintessence even from nothingness, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

From dull privations, and lean emptiness; <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

He ruin’d me, and I am re-begot <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Of absence, darkness, death: things which are not. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

All others, from all things, draw all that’s good, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Life, soul, form, spirit, whence they being have; <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

         I, by Love’s limbec, am the grave <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

         Of all that’s nothing. Oft a flood <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

                Have we two wept, and so <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Drown’d the whole world, us two; oft did we grow <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

To be two chaoses, when we did show <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Care to aught else; and often absences <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Withdrew our souls, and made us carcasses. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

But I am by her death (which word wrongs her) <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Of the first nothing the elixir grown; <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

         Were I a man, that I were one <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

         I needs must know; I should prefer, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

                If I were any beast, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Some ends, some means; yea plants, yea stones detest, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

And love; all, all some properties invest; <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

If I an ordinary nothing were, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

As shadow, a light and body must be here. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

But I am none; nor will my sun renew. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

You lovers, for whose sake the lesser sun <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

         At this time to the Goat is run <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

         To fetch new lust, and give it you, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

                Enjoy your summer all; <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Since she enjoys her long night’s festival, <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Let me prepare towards her, and let me call <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

This hour her vigil, and her eve, since this <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n

Both the year’s, and the day’s deep midnight is. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\n
